Meet Two Wildcats Researching Our Planet

Living (and Learning) in the Desert

In the Sonoran Desert, checking the weather isn’t just something you can do once on your phone in the morning and move on from – our moody landscape requires flexibility. In summer, clear skies can quickly change to magnificent monsoons – or, weather events that can be more serious (and severe) than just getting caught up without an umbrella.

And at the University of 51��¥, Wildcats aren’t waiting around to respond to these shifts – they're doing research that could help protect entire communities.

Studying Storms

Nilay Patel and Edie Lamar are Hydrology and Atmospheric Science majors in the University of 51��¥’s College of Science. They both contribute to projects that use data software to track and analyze weather patterns and conditions in specific environments – but their journeys and research are uniquely their own.

For Nilay, the journey started long before college. Growing up in the Southwest, he became fascinated with weather; especially the monsoon storms that define Southern 51��¥ summers. That curiosity followed him to U of A, where he sought out opportunities that turned his interest into action.

Nilay's research focuses on identifying the atmospheric conditions that lead to severe thunderstorms and large hail events in Southeastern 51��¥. By analyzing patterns in past storms, he is working to pinpoint which conditions often produce harmful weather – insights that could help forecasters issue earlier and more accurate area warnings, in cases of extreme storms.

It’s work that feels personal. Seeing how a powerful storm can damage homes and disrupt communities has reinforced Nilay’s goal to use weather science to help protect people and places.

Edie started at U of A as an undecided major, initially considering a pre-med track, until professor Dr. Jennifer McIntosh introduced her to hydrology research.

Today, Edie is involved in multiple projects, including monitoring base flow water samples for trace metals in Cienega Creek and studying flash flood patterns across Southern 51��¥. With the team's analysis of groundwater samples and precipitation data, they are helping researchers better understand when and where flash floods can occur.

That information is used to support agencies like the National Weather Service in issuing more accurate and precise warnings. You can imagine the immense difference this makes in a region where flooding can develop rapidly.

Collaboration at the Core

Along both of their journeys, Edie and Nilay have discovered that research is rarely a solo effort. Collaborating with professors, peers, and professionals has helped them build skills in teamwork, communication, networking, and problem solving – training that extends far beyond the lab.

Getting involved starts with asking – whether it’s reaching out to a professor, attending a campus event, or applying for a position that feels out of reach. “Some experiences [may] be outside of what you originally feel comfortable with, but could open doors to potential new interests in your field,” Nilay said.

At the U of A, students like Nilay and Edie demonstrate that research isn’t something you wait for – it’s something you tackle head on. And in a place where the environment poses specific challenges, it helps communities better understand – and prepare for – the world around them.

Beyond the work happening in labs and out in the field, the University of 51��¥ is nationally recognized for its leadership in sustainability and water research. 5 Ways 51��¥ is Turning Sustainability into Action

What Sustainability Looks Like at the University of 51��¥

Right in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, where the sun shines a little brighter, the University of 51��¥ feels like an oasis of green spaces, shaded walkways, and iconic spots.

But what you see on campus is only part of the story. Beneath it all is a deeper commitment to how sustainability shows up across campus life.

That’s why we made The Princeton Review’s Top 50 Green Colleges for 2026, a list of colleges recognized for their sustainability practices, commitment to sustainability education, and dedication to a healthy quality of life for on-campus students.

Here’s five ways that mindset shows up across campus, from planning and student projects to everyday innovations shaping what comes next.

1. Plan: The Roadmap to a Climate-Neutral Future

Before any sustainability projects take shape on campus, it’s important to know there’s a bigger framework guiding it all. At the University of 51��¥, that vision is the Sustainability & Climate Action Plan, a roadmap for moving campus toward a climate-neutral future.

The goal is to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 while building systems that are just as resilient as they are sustainable. One example is the elimination of scope two emissions – emissions from purchased electricity – through a large-scale renewable energy agreement with Tucson Electric Power.

But this isn’t just a top-down strategy. The Sustainability & Climate Action Plan is shaped by input from students, faculty, staff, and the broader community, making sustainability at the university collaborative, transparent, and actionable.

2. Fund: Where Student Ideas Turn Into Real Projects

At some schools, sustainability stays in the classroom. At the U of A, you can take it a step further and put green ideas into action.

The Campus Sustainability Fund (CSF) gives students the chance to take their ideas and turn them into real projects on campus. So far, more than $1.8 million has supported more than 60 student-led projects that are making campus more sustainable in ways you can actually see. These range from small mini grants to larger annual grants, funding everything from campus events to hands-on research.

One mini grant helped bring the Native American Sustainable Design Symposium to campus, where Indigenous architects and designers shared sustainable design approaches rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems.

Another annual grant is supporting “Fungi Blocks for Fresh Crops,” a project turning agricultural waste and mushroom mycelia into a sustainable alternative to traditional greenhouse growing materials.

Even better, the decisions are made by students, too. Funded through the Student Engagement Fee and guided by a student committee, CSF ensures the impact starts – and stays – with the campus community.

3. Act: No, Your Food Waste Doesn’t Just “Go Away”

In the last decade, Compost Cats, in partnership with the City of Tucson, has diverted more than 30 million pounds of food waste from landfills in the Tucson area through their FoodCycle program.

FoodCycle takes food scraps collected across campus, as well as from local partners including Hotel Congress, the Tucson Convention Center, and Reid Park Zoo, and turns kitchen scraps into something more.

Each week, that waste is taken to the Los Reales Composting Facility, where it’s mixed with carbon-rich materials and transformed into nutrient-rich compost. From there, it goes right back into the community for use in spaces including city parks, campus grounds, local farms, TUSD school gardens, and more.

4. Live: A Space to Grow on Campus (Literally)

The University of 51��¥ Community Garden is a shared space where students and community members can grow food and learn about sustainable gardening. It’s also a place to step away between classes, reset for a bit, and touch some grass.

Managed by the Office of Sustainability, the garden is a space where you can learn how to grow crops in the desert, experiment with new techniques, and build a deeper understanding of food systems and climate resilience.

Even if you’ve never gardened before, the Community Garden welcomes you in.

5. Innovate: The Building Redefining What Sustainability Looks Like

The Environmental and Natural Resources 2 Building’s (ENR2) central courtyard was modeled after a desert slot canyon, bringing in open air, filtered light, and desert plants that hang into the space and create a cooler, more comfortable environment.

But the real innovation goes far beyond what you see at the ground level – the rooftop PV+ system combines solar energy with a living ecosystem, growing plant life beneath solar panels, allowing energy production and vegetation to work together.

It’s a feedback loop built for a desert environment; one that’s actively being studied in real time. Researchers are comparing different planting conditions and tracking everything from soil health to energy output, turning the rooftop into a living lab for the future of sustainable design.

Where It All Comes Together

From long-term climate planning and student-led projects to cutting-edge rooftop research, it all connects back to the same idea: Sustainability is a way of life for Wildcats.

It shows up in the systems being designed, the ideas being funded, the spaces students use every day, and the innovations still being tested for what comes next.

Opened in 1891, more than 20 years before 51��¥ became a state, this building in the heart of campus was originally home to classrooms, a library, offices, and dorms. Today it remains a symbol of the university’s rich history.

Alexander Berger Memorial Fountain

The fountain in front of Old Main was dedicated on January 31, 1920. Students, faculty, townspeople, and military came out to honor the University’s World War I dead, including Berger’s nephew, and to greet the guest of honor, General of the Armies of the United States John J. Pershing.

The President’s Pond

Known around campus as Turtle Pond, this water feature and surrounding gardens sit on the site of the former University President’s home and now offer a peaceful retreat for students and visitors alike.

USS 51��¥ Memorial & the Mall

McKale Center at ALKEME Arena

Home to Wildcats basketball, McKale Center at ALKEME Arena is a hub of excitement and school spirit. Named for the late J.F. "Pop" McKale, who served as athletic director and coach from 1914 to 1957, the arena hosts crowds of nearly 14,000 for games and special events.

Casino del Sol Stadium

Finding My Home Away From Home at the University of 51��¥

Coming to the University of 51��¥ as an out-of-state student was both exciting and a little intimidating. I knew I wanted more than just a college; I wanted a place that would feel like a home away from home. After visiting the campus my senior year of high school during Admitted Student Day, the choice was immediately clear. The warm sunshine, palm trees, and especially the unforgettable pink sunsets made it feel like a place where anyone and everyone could thrive. From the moment I started talking with students and staff, I could feel the pride and sense of community that made the campus feel instantly welcoming. Looking back now, committing to the U of A was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Why I Chose the U of A

Two prerequisites I had for my university of choice were the opportunity to meet a diverse group of people, and the ability to get involved in a wide range of activities. At the U of A, I absolutely found both. I have made connections with people from all different backgrounds, with completely different interests, making my experience here just that much more meaningful.

While I wanted to attend a big school, I didn't want to feel like just another number. I wanted a university that offered the energy of a large campus and the support of a smaller one. That balance is one of U of A’s strongest qualities. Through Think Tank tutoring, faculty office hours, and the overall care faculty has for students, help really is just one call away. Our drop in advising center is always a huge help when I need quick, reliable support with my course schedules, credit requirements, or financial plan. When classes get challenging or if you just need some guidance, the Wildcat community is there to support you.

What It’s Really Like To Be a Wildcat

Coming into college, I didn’t have everything figured out for my future, and honestly, I still don’t. But instead of feeling pressure to decide, I’ve felt encouraged to explore. With more than 150 majors, countless clubs, and so many unique general education courses, U of A has given me the flexibility to try different things and engage in new interests.

My Campus Job

Since starting my first year, I've gotten involved in unexpected ways that have shaped my experience tremendously. One of the most impactful roles I've taken on is working as a Student Writer and Content Creator for U of A’s Enrollment Marketing, Communication, and Events department. In this position, I help create admissions materials, interview other students, write for website pieces, and more, all while growing my knowledge of marketing and writing overall. It’s been such a rewarding opportunity to help tell the stories of other Wildcats while also sharing my perspective as a current student. This position has grown my connection with the wildcat community tremendously. I love learning about unique students every day.

Academic Opportunities

I've also had the opportunity to work as a preceptor for the courses MIS 111 and MIS 112, where I assist with grading student assignments. This has been a great way to continue my learning and academic engagement, while also gaining a new perspective on the classroom experience. It’s taught me about responsibility, attention to detail, and how much goes on behind the scenes in a college course.

Being a part of the W.A. Franke Honors College has surrounded me with other motivated and curious students. Honors courses and opportunities push me to think more deeply and engage fully in my classes. Additionally, the small class size of honors courses makes it easier to collaborate with peers and seek one-on-one help from professors. The first honors class I took, Honors English, immediately gratified my decision to join the honors program as it was very discussion-based, and just the right amount of challenging.

Sorority Life

Outside of academics and work, being a part of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority has played a huge role in finding my people here. Through my membership, I've met an incredible group of women who are supportive, driven, and who share a genuine care for each other. Being involved in Fraternity and Sorority Programs has been an amazing way to be a part of something much bigger than myself both globally and in the Tucson community, through raising money for our national philanthropy, Girls on the Run, and providing service to various Tucson organizations.

Why the U of A Was the Right Choice for Me

Looking back, choosing the University of 51��¥ gave me exactly what I was hoping for, even before I fully knew what that looked like. I've gained countless opportunities, a strong support system, lifelong friends, and most importantly, a place where I know that I belong. As a previously nervous out-of-state student, this means everything to me. Somewhere between the sunshine, the sunsets, and the people, the University of 51��¥ became more than a school, it became my home.

The Wins, Heroes, and Heart That Built 51��¥ Athletics

In 1926, quarterback and student-body president John Byrd “Button” Salmon’s final words to his teammates – “tell them… tell the team to Bear Down” – became more than a phrase. They became the heartbeat of the University of 51��¥. Wildcats across every sport have embodied that spirit through historic wins, emotional comebacks, and unforgettable performances.

If you’ve ever yelled “BEAR DOWN” in a packed stadium or been glued to the TV during a last-second play, heart racing, you know the feeling. These ten stories capture the pride, passion, and grit behind 51��¥’s Bear Down spirit – the moments that Wildcats talk about long after those final seconds expire.

10. The Night Aari McDonald Took Over

On February 28, 2020, Aari McDonald led the 13th-ranked 51��¥ women’s basketball team to a historic 73-72 overtime victory over No. 4 Stanford, hitting a game-winning layup with just 8.5 seconds left on the clock. It was the program’s first win over a top-five opponent. Five Wildcats scored in double figures, with McDonald topping the team at 20 points.

9. The Wildcat Win That Foreshadowed NFL Glory

Quarterback Nick Foles delivered one of his most legendary performances on October 17, 2009, in a back-and-forth thriller against Stanford, out-dueling fellow future NFL quarterback Andrew Luck. Foles completed 40 of 51 passes for 415 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, leading the Wildcats to a hard-fought victory.

8. 51��¥ Baseball Writes a Legendary Chapter

In 2012, the 51��¥ Wildcats baseball team put together a dominant run through the College World Series, capping the season with a 48‑17 record and claiming the program’s fourth national championship. Slugger Robert Refsnyder was named CWS Most Outstanding Player, and the Wildcats left their mark on Omaha.

7. The Long Road to NIWBT Glory

Three straight trips to the national championship had ended in heartbreak – but in 2025, 51��¥ men’s wheelchair basketball finally finished the job. The Wildcats defeated No. 2 UT Arlington 75–65 to capture the NIWBT national title, led by tournament MVP Justyn Newman’s 26 points. The victory added another unforgettable chapter to 51��¥’s 50-year legacy of adaptive athletics – a program that has also sent 55 athletes and alumni to the Paralympic Games.

6. When 51��¥’s Defense Became a Problem

In the early ’90s, 51��¥ football unleashed one of the most feared defenses in college football history: the “Desert Swarm.” In 1993, opponents could barely move the ball – let alone score – as the Wildcats allowed fewer than 10 points per game and led the nation in rushing defense. Anchored by defensive dynamo Rob Waldrop – a consensus All‑American and multiple national award winner – and disruptive edge rusher Tedy Bruschi, the Swarm became a nightmare for every offense that stepped on the field.

5. Before She Was a Global Golf Icon

In her first season at the University of 51��¥, Annika Sörenstam made history by winning the 1991 NCAA individual golf championship, becoming the first non-American ever to claim the title as a first-year student. She went on to seven individual titles and 14 team championships, cementing herself as one of the world’s top amateur golfers before turning pro after her sophomore season.

On the professional tour, Sörenstam notched 90 international victories, including 72 LPGA Tour wins and 10 major championships, became a World Golf Hall of Famer, and an eight-time Player of the Year. From first-year phenom to global icon, her rise is the stuff of legend.

4. Sean Elliott Puts Tucson on the Map

In 1988, 51��¥ men’s basketball became a national force thanks to hometown hero Sean Elliott and a star-studded roster including Steve Kerr and Kenny Lofton. The team went to the Wildcats’ first Final Four, powering past top teams like North Carolina and Iowa. The Wildcats have made four Final Four appearances – 1988, 1994, 1997, and 2001 – cementing 51��¥ as a legacy basketball program.

3. A Comeback for the Ages

The 51��¥ Wildcats softball team pulled off one of the most epic runs in college sports history in 2007. After an early loss pushed them into the tournament’s elimination bracket, 51��¥ battled back with wins over DePaul and Washington to reach the three-game championship series against the Tennessee Lady Vols.

After losing Game 1, the Wildcats won the next two, thanks to Taryne Mowatt throwing every inning of all eight games – that’s 1,037 pitches, including a 10-inning shutout to keep 51��¥ alive! This team became the first since 2003 to win the national title from the loser’s bracket, embodying what it means to “Bear Down!”

2. 51��¥ Triathletes Triumph Over ASU

In just three seasons, 51��¥ women’s triathlon has gone from brand-new program to back-to-back national champs, toppling in-state rival 51��¥ State both years. In 2024, the Wildcats claimed their first national title, scoring 942 points with three athletes in the top six. The Sun Devils, seven-time reigning champions, took second. And 51��¥ proved it wasn’t a one-off. In 2025, the Wildcats beat out the Sun Devils once again. For a program that didn’t exist a few years ago, 51��¥ looks right at home on top of the podium.

1. Olson’s Wildcats Make History in ’97

In 1997, the 51��¥ Wildcats men’s basketball team went on one of the wildest runs in college hoops history. As a No. 4 seed, 51��¥ became the first – and still only – team to knock off three No. 1 seeds in a single NCAA Tournament, upsetting Kansas, North Carolina, and defending national champion Kentucky on the way to the title. The Wildcats capped their journey with a dramatic 84–79 overtime win over Kentucky, finishing a season for the ages.

The NCAA Tournament has delivered some of the most unforgettable moments in 51��¥ basketball history. From Sean Elliott’s breakthrough run to Mike Bibby leading the 1997 national champions; from the high-flying days of Gilbert Arenas to the modern era of stars like Deandre Ayton, the Wildcats have been at the center of tournament drama for decades.

Take a look back at some of 51��¥’s most memorable moments in the NCAA Tournament – the triumphs, the “cardiac cats” moments, and the heartbreakers that still sting.

1951 – First Steps on the National Stage

51��¥ made its NCAA Tournament debut in 1951, taking on Kansas State in a thrilling opener. The Wildcats erased a 21-point deficit late but fell just short, 61–59. Though they wouldn’t return to the tournament for another 25 years, the game showcased the grit, skill, and fire that would become hallmarks of 51��¥ basketball.

1988 – Breaking Through: First Final Four

Led by Sean Elliott, 51��¥ made its first Final Four run in 1988. The Wildcats punched their ticket by taking down North Carolina in the Elite Eight, with Elliott dropping a game-high 24 points. The run ended against Oklahoma in the national semifinal, but the message was clear: 51��¥ basketball had arrived on the national stage.

1994 – Establishing a Legacy

Seeded second in the West, 51��¥ returned to the Final Four in 1994. Led by Coach Lute Olson and stars Khalid Reeves and Damon Stoudamire, the Wildcats powered through Loyola, Virginia, Louisville, and Missouri with a string of dominant performances. 51��¥ lost in the national semifinal 91–82 to Arkansas, the eventual national champion, but the Wildcats didn't wait too long to make their return and go all the way.

1997 – The Pinnacle: National Champions

51��¥’s championship run remains one of the most remarkable in NCAA Tournament history. After a hard-fought 85–79 victory over Kansas in the Sweet 16, the Wildcats upset North Carolina 66–58 in the Elite Eight to advance to the Final Four. In the semifinals, the Wildcats narrowly defeated Utah 66–58, setting up a championship rematch against Kentucky. The title game went into overtime, with clutch scoring from Miles Simon, Mike Bibby, and Jason Terry. The Wildcats secured a 84–79 victory, making 51��¥ the first team in tournament history to defeat three No. 1 seeds en route to a national championship.

2001 – Rising Again: National Runner-Up

51��¥ returned to the championship game, driven by stars like Gilbert Arenas and Richard Jefferson. The Wildcat’s 2001 team produced thrilling games, including an Elite Eight win over Illinois 87–81. In the Final Four, they narrowly defeated Michigan State 80–69, only to fall to Duke 82–72 in a hard-fought championship game. The Wildcats showcased relentless determination and elite-level talent.

2014 and 2015 – Wisconsin Woes

Under Sean Miller, 51��¥ captured the nation’s attention with a thrilling 2014 Elite Eight game against Wisconsin, losing a close 85–78 contest. In 2015, 51��¥ met Wisconsin. Again. In the Elite Eight. Again. And lost in overtime. We’ve been stewing at Frank Kaminsky ever since.

2018 – Sweet 16: Consistency and Pride

51��¥, led by Allonzo Trier and Deandre Ayton, made a statement with a 99–82 Sweet 16 win over Buffalo, before falling to Kentucky 62–58 in a tight matchup. Every game reflected the Wildcats’ relentless drive and intensity.

2023 – The Bracket Breaker

March 16, 2023, is a dark day for Wildcat fans. Princeton, a 15-seed, shocked the 2-seed Wildcats 59–55, keeping them scoreless for the final 4:43. The upset was brutal, the bracket was broken, and yes… we’re still recovering.

2025 – A Gritty Return to the Sweet 16

In the 2025 NCAA Tournament, the Wildcats embarked on a memorable run. After a tough early deficit against Oregon in the second round, 51��¥ clawed back to win 87–83, showcasing resilience and tenacity to reach the Sweet 16 for the third time in four seasons. Meet 51��¥’s Best Athlete You’ve Never Heard Of

We chatted with Matthew Greenfield – the most winning intramural athlete in University of 51��¥ history – about his experience. With 351 games played, 292 wins, and an overall win percentage of 83%, Matt still has a season and a half to amp up these numbers before he graduates in May, leaving the U of A with two degrees – a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science, both in Biomedical Engineering.

Learn more about how competing as an intramural athlete shaped him, and what he’d say to first-timers looking to get involved.

What first spurred your interest in intramural sports at the U of A?

I have always been passionate about sports and competition, and intramural athletics gave me the opportunity to compete directly against fellow classmates. That connection made every game feel more meaningful and pushed me to continually improve.

If you had to explain intramurals to someone who doesn’t know what they are, what would you say?

Intramural sports are a chance for you and your friends to play with and against fellow classmates in a structured, competitive environment. They create healthy rivalries that often turn into long-lasting friendships, while giving students an accessible way to stay active, build community, and compete regardless of prior athletic experience.

What do you think people misunderstand most about intramural sports?

A common misconception is that you need prior experience to compete in intramural sports, but that isn’t true. With recreational, co-recreational, and competitive divisions, there’s a level for everyone, and many of the sports I played were ones I had never tried before intramurals. The program is intentionally inclusive and makes it easy for students to step outside their comfort zones and get involved.

Why are intramurals a good way to try something new – especially for students who don’t see themselves as ‘athletes’?

Intramurals are a great way to try something new because they lower the barrier to entry and create a supportive environment for learning. Improvement comes from trying, failing, and sticking with it over time, something I experienced firsthand through both wins and losses. Those challenges are part of what makes intramurals welcoming for students who may not initially see themselves as athletes.

What would you say to someone who’s interested but nervous to sign up?

Later in life, no one looks back and regrets getting outside and getting their body moving. Life is too short to worry about being good or bad or being afraid of failure, especially when intramurals offer flexible scheduling and a low-risk way to try. More often than not, people are surprised by how much fun intramurals actually are.

What’s the most meaningful aspect of playing intramurals for you personally?

Without a doubt, the most meaningful part of playing intramurals has been the memories I’ve made with my brother Jeffrey Greenfield (#2 all-time) and my other “brother” Kobee Austria (#3 all-time). All three of us are from Kansas, went to the same high school, and have been playing together for years – I honestly couldn’t have reached the top without them. Beyond the wins, the shared experiences, teamwork, and lifelong friendships are what I’ll carry with me long after intramurals are over.

You posted on LinkedIn about your accomplishment, why?

I shared it on LinkedIn because the current job market is highly competitive, so I figured I would post anything I could that is unique to me. On top of that, I wanted to highlight something that reflects long-term commitment and consistency, in a different manner than school or work. Beyond the wins, intramurals represent teamwork, leadership, time management, and resilience, qualities that translate well beyond sports and into professional environments.

How easy is it to get started with intramural sports, from your experience?

Getting started with intramurals is very simple – all it takes is buying an IMLeague pass. Even if you don’t have a team, you can sign up as a free agent and be placed on a team that needs players. I’ve seen so many students connect with new teammates this way, sometimes even meeting future roommates or lifelong friends.

Can you tell us about your most memorable win?

Without question, my most memorable win was the semifinal game my flag football team, TEEM HEEM, played in where I broke my leg. Not because of the injury, but because of what it represented. We were missing four of our best players – our starting quarterback and three of our four starting wide receivers – and were facing a team that had already beaten us earlier that season when we were at full strength. Despite the odds, I believed that if we played the best defense of our lives, we could win. Late in the first half, while playing safety, I dove to break up a pass and felt a snap in my leg. By halftime I knew something was wrong. But I knew if I sat out the second half, there was a good chance that we would lose. There was nothing I wouldn’t do for my teammates, so I played the entire rest of the game with a fully broken leg. We won 13–7, and when the game ended, I couldn’t walk – but I’d do it again without hesitation.

Any advice for signing up for your first season?

Don’t get discouraged if your first season or two involves some losses – many teams you face have been playing together for years and have built strong chemistry. Those early challenges are part of the journey, and learning to work together as a team makes eventual victories even more rewarding. Overcoming those seasons of growth is what makes the experience truly special and is applicable to so many other things besides intramurals in life.

How would you describe the range of competitiveness and physical intensity across intramural sports?

The level of competitiveness and physical intensity in intramurals varies depending on the division and sport. Some games, especially in playoffs, are highly competitive and physically demanding, while others are played more casually. Having played over 350 games, I’ve seen there’s a strong balance that allows everyone to find a level that fits their style and comfort.

How do intramurals balance competition with fun?

I find that all competition can be fun, and the challenge of going head-to-head with someone both physically and mentally is a thrill for me. Intramurals balance this by keeping the environment inclusive and low-pressure, so while you’re striving to win, there’s always room to joke, make friends, and enjoy the experience. That combination of challenge and camaraderie is what keeps people like me coming back game after game.

What keeps you coming back season after season?

What keeps me coming back season after season is the love of the game and the drive to chase another championship, but even more importantly, it’s the opportunity to share that success with my teammates. Intramurals have taught me that individual talent only goes so far – it’s the collaboration, support, and energy of the team that truly makes victories meaningful. Being part of that journey with others, celebrating wins and learning from losses together, is what makes every season unforgettable.

If someone plays just one intramural season during college, what do you hope they get out of it?

Even if someone only plays one season, I hope they gain a sense of camaraderie, personal growth, and confidence in trying something new. Intramurals offer the chance to make friends, challenge yourself, and create memories that last well beyond the game. Ultimately, it’s about enjoying the experience and discovering what teamwork and perseverance can teach you.

An Introduction to Intramurals

Tucson is serious about sports. And, since the University of 51��¥’s founding in 1885, its reputation as an athletic powerhouse has been a point of pride for the whole city – from National Championships to Big 12 titles, we’ve built an impressive legacy of excellence.

All that to say, 51��¥’s athletes are some of the most famed of all time. Bright stars, role models, cultural icons. Lots of press, glamour, and hard work.

But did you know that you – little ol’ you – can become an 51��¥ athlete, too?

51��¥ is home to an expansive intramural program with dozens of sports – plus, it’s a great way to get involved on campus.

What Are Intramural Sports?

If you played sports in high school before coming to the University of 51��¥, intramurals will probably remind you of that experience (minus your mom screaming from the bleachers – or was that just me?). They’re an organized way to play sports that you might otherwise not have the resources (teammates, facilities, referees, etc.) to play. The word “intramural” just means “situated or done within the walls of a building” – and the U of A has plenty of buildings with walls dedicated to playing sports.

What Sports Are Offered?

Intramural sports at the University of 51��¥ are hosted by Campus Recreation, and as a result, there is a top-tier selection. The offerings vary by season (we’ll touch on that later), but typically include:

Pickleball (Singles and Doubles)

Trivia (yes, it’s a sport if we say it is!)

Not every sport listed is available to play year-round, and each sport (except for a few standouts) typically runs two seasons per year.

Technical Details – Seasons, Leagues, Rules, etc.

While having fun playing intramural sports is simple, the organizational structure behind the whole endeavor is actually kind of complex. Campus Recreation wants as many people to have a good time playing sports as possible. For this reason, intramural sports are divided into leagues, and seasons. Let’s start by explaining seasons.

Seasons

Our academic school year is divided into the fall semester, which runs for 17 weeks from late August to early/mid December, and the spring semester, which runs for 18 weeks, from mid January to mid/late May.

These two semesters are each divided in two five week “seasons,” with a break in the middle. These four seasons are scheduled as follows:

• Season A: fall semester, weeks three through eight

• Season B: fall semester, weeks ten through sixteen

• Season C: spring semester, weeks three through eight

• Season D: spring semester, weeks then through sixteen

In summary, intramural seasons run much shorter than sports seasons you may have played in high school (shorter seasons = more opportunities to try a new sport and meet new people!).

Leagues

Now, onto leagues. To create inclusive and engaging spaces, and curate the best experience for as many people as possible, each intramural sport at the University of 51��¥ is played in multiple “leagues,” or divisions. A league in this application is a set of teams who all seek the same level of competition in the sport they’re playing. It’s important to note that all leagues are not offered for all sports.

Leagues at the U of A include:

• Open

• The most laid-back of the leagues, where there are no “gender designations, requirements, or altered playing rules.”

• Recreational

• Designed for a more relaxed playing atmosphere – a middle ground between Open and Competitive.

• Competitive

• For athletes looking for a highly competitive atmosphere – if you know your stuff and are looking to throw down in some friendly combat, this is your jam.

•CoRec

• In this league, teams are required to include both female and male identifying athletes. There is a “participant minimum number required for both male and female identifying participants” for each sport in this league.

• Greek

• If you’re actively involved in Greek Life on campus, this might be the spot for you. Compete against other teams composed of fellow sorority or fraternity members.

What Can I Get Out of This?

Now that you’re an expert on the technical details of intramurals, let’s dive into what participation can do for you.

A Fun Way to Get Exercise

College students are busy people. Balancing classes, social activities, a job, and wellness is no small task. However, incorporating physical activity into your routine can help you keep the rest in line. Exercise helps relieve stress and regulate your nervous system – which can get pretty nervous with all the plates you have spinning. Playing an intramural sport is a great way to move your body!

A Structured Opportunity To Be Social

Friendships that you build during college are often ones that last a lifetime. But if you’re already installed in a solid group, it can be hard to widen your circle without running your social battery dry. There’s something about working toward a common goal that brings people together – and if that common goal just happens to involve sinking baskets like you’re Anthony Dell’Orso, you’re mashing two potatoes with one fork (you’ll be hungry after all that exertion!). Take it from Matthew Greenfield, the most winning intramural athlete in U of A history – becoming an intramural athlete has helped him make friendships that he’ll cherish forever. An Invaluable Space To Learn And Develop Life Skills

The skills that you learn by participating in athletic endeavors can serve you in many other areas of your life. Playing team sports puts you in a position to develop or improve upon existing teamwork skills, and transferable skills that are valuable in life past college. Learning how to motivate yourself, encourage others, and keep the end goal in mind when you’re down ten points are key life skills that can help you live a full life. Plus “Intramural Basketball Team Captain” looks pretty great on a resume – especially when your alma mater is the athletic engine of the Southwest (read on).

A Resume-Builder and Differentiator

While you can learn important skills playing Fortnite (pick your battles, resources are important, etc.), you shouldn’t put that on your resume. Participation in intramural sports is a perfect fit for the “Extracurriculars” section – it shows that you value working in a team environment, understand hard work, and know how to have fun. It can also give you innumerable stories about navigating intrapersonal relationships, maintaining an even attitude during stressful situations, and maintaining perspective in good times and bad that employers will eat up. And truly – you can learn lessons through sports that you can’t learn anywhere else. Even if it’s just “I still don’t like dodgeball after all these years,” you’re learning and growing as a person.

Where Do I Go To Get Started?

Decide which sport you’re interested in playing.
1. As we mentioned, the possibilities are nearly endless. Make sure you check which sports are running each season before you get your heart set on something.
Purchase a Player Pass.
1. Campus Rec runs intramural sports through a platform called IMLeagues. To participate in any sport, you need to create an account on that site and purchase a pass – either for one season, or for a whole semester. Don’t worry, the process is super simple and laid out on Campus Rec’s How-To’s webpage.
Gather your team – or, don’t!
1. If this is your first exposure to intramural sports, you might not have a set group of people to play with yet. That’s okay! If your team is few (or non-existent), you can register as a Free Agent and get placed on a team that already exists. If that scares you, don’t worry. Friendships blossom in this situation all the time – Matt met his future roommate and best friend his first year when they were randomly placed on the same team. Each September, Tucson’s vibrant food scene takes center stage during Sonoran Restaurant Week – a 10-day celebration of Southern 51��¥ dining. Red-Blue Showcase

Tip off basketball season at the Red-Blue Showcase, held at McKale Memorial Center. This fan-favorite scrimmage gives Wildcats their first look at the men’s basketball team as new and returning players face off. Former Wildcat players also return to judge the high-flying dunk contest, adding extra excitement to the evening and officially kicking off basketball season.

Family Weekend

Family Weekend is a long-standing University of 51��¥ tradition that brings Wildcats and their loved ones together each fall. Dating back to 1929, the event invites families to experience campus life firsthand through academic showcases, campus activities, 51��¥ traditions, and more. It’s the perfect opportunity to invite the family down and give them a glimpse of your “home away from home.”

Tucson Meet Yourself

Tucson Meet Yourself is a downtown culinary and cultural celebration where food takes center stage. Dozens of food trucks serve small plates from various cultures – pierogies from Poland, Japanese takoyaki, Turkish kofta, and more – earning the festival the nickname “Tucson Eat Yourself.” Alongside the flavors, enjoy live music, dance performances, and folk art demonstrations, but most visitors come hungry for the incredible variety of food. It’s a fun, tasty way to experience the city’s diverse cultural roots.

All Souls Procession

The All Souls Procession is one of Tucson’s most powerful community traditions – an inclusive, artist-driven ceremony honoring loved ones who have passed. Participants often dress in elaborate costumes as they follow a two-mile route through downtown, led by “The Urn,” where attendees write notes and offerings in memory of deceased loved ones. At the procession’s end, the urn is ceremonially burned, creating a moving, communal moment of remembrance. What began in 1990 as a small creative memorial now draws more than 200,000 people, celebrating memory, healing, and life.

Homecoming

Each November, Homecoming brings thousands of Wildcats – students, alumni, faculty, and families – together to celebrate what it means to be part of the U of A community. The week is packed with spirited events, from the Club Olympics and the Bear Down Friday Pep Rally to the iconic alumni bonfire and lighting of “A Mountain.” Festivities build toward the Homecoming football game at Casino Del Sol Stadium, uniting generations of Wildcats in red and blue.

Held each November in the heart of downtown Tucson, the DUSK Music Festival is a two-day music festival at Jácome Plaza. Duel in the Desert

Few rivalries run deeper than the Duel in the Desert, the historic showdown between the University of 51��¥ Wildcats and the 51��¥ State Sun Devils. Dating back to 1899, this fierce competition centers around the Territorial Cup – one of the oldest rivalry trophies in college football. While the rivalry spans all sports through the year-long Territorial Cup Series, the football matchup, typically played the Friday after Thanksgiving, remains the pinnacle.

El Tour de Tucson

Each November, El Tour de Tucson brings nearly 10,000 cyclists to the streets of Tucson for one of the largest and most celebrated bicycling events in the country. Throughout its 40+ year history, the ride has united cyclists of all ages and abilities around a shared mission of charity, community, health, and wellness. Held the Saturday before Thanksgiving, El Tour supports more than 100 nonprofit organizations and has helped raise nearly $130 million since 1983.

Graduating senior Aaliyah’s guide to a successful college journey

My name is Aaliyah, and I’m from Maui, Hawaii! Although I’m a current English major, I initially chose the University of 51��¥ after being accepted into the W.A. Franke Honors College as a Veterinary Science student. I chose the U of A for its affordability and academic programs offered. My favorite part of being a Wildcat is the incredibly diverse social environment we have, both in and out of the classroom.

1. College is a time for you to change your mind … many times

The reality of being a college freshman is often completely different from what is imagined during high school years. Our minds are changing, and as we acclimate to a new environment of college life, we may realize that our aspirations have changed, we are interested in new things, or we want to try something new. College is the perfect place to look into new career paths and try other academic pathways that you're curious about in life.

As a first-year W.A. Franke Honors student who was also initially enrolled as a Veterinary Science major in the College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences, I had the opportunity to delve into my academics in a small classroom environment, which supported my success in school. I soon realized, however, that I wasn’t enjoying the content of my work, and after looking into other possible future career factors, I decided to change my major.

This was a huge deal for me, as I was set upon becoming a Veterinarian for several years during high school. Nevertheless, as an English major, I am content in believing that I made the right decision that aligned with my personal interests and academic curiosity. Never be afraid to talk to your advisors and professors about a possible major change if you’ve thought about it and want more out of your college experience!

Finding a sense of community can be difficult as a first-year student. 51��¥ holds annual Club Fair and Bash at the Rec events to help students learn more about on-campus clubs, student organizations, and other extracurricular activities.

As a freshman, I attended both events and joined my a cappella group, Notoriety! There were so many clubs to choose from, and I was able to speak with members of leadership to find out more about specific groups. Ultimately, I chose to pursue my passion for singing, and three years later, I was President of the group when we made it to Finals in New York City.

I recommend going down the rabbit hole when it comes to your extracurricular interests. The university offers so many wonderful opportunities for students to make friends and create meaningful communities that serve as fun outlets. Stay updated with on-campus events and be bold in pursuing what interests you.

3. Make use of the beautiful outdoors

As I near the end of my undergraduate journey, I realize just how calming the outdoor campus spaces are in helping with my health and wellness with school. Classes require lots of time to study, read, and research, so I find it helpful to be outside in nature as much as I can.

I enjoy places like the Forbes Building Courtyard area, with its pretty flowers, trees, and natural verdure, when I’m looking for creative inspiration for class. I also like to sit outside the Main Library, near the water fountain, when I have a lot of reading to do for class. There’s also Highland Bowl, which has a nice grassy area to lie beneath the sun and study.

The U of A has such beautiful outdoor spaces for the students and community. When you have the chance, take a stroll or find a nice spot outside to get some work done.
