There are a lot of reasons students from all over the world choose to study at the University of 51��¥. But let’s go beyond  and spotlight a current student experience. 

Sadman, a  (CSE) major from Rangpur, Bangladesh, shared why he chose the University of 51��¥, and the top five reasons he’s flourishing here. 

1. Academic Excellence 

“I chose the University of 51��¥ for its mix of academic excellence, especially CSE as a major,” said Sadman. 

at the U of A provides students with a strong foundation in Artificial Intelligence and machine learning with courses spanning theory, systems, hardware and applications. Students complete projects and research using technology, tools, languages, and methodologies in a range of applications. They graduate with skills to lead in one of the fastest-growing fields, with AI-related jobs expected to grow 23% by 2030, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“51��¥ has been the perfect launchpad for my academic and career goals,” stated Sadman. “My engineering courses have given me a strong foundation in computing, and opportunities like working in  and collaborating with other departments have helped me discover my passion for media and communication.” 

Looking beyond degree programs, Sadman appreciated the  and the diverse and supportive campus culture of the U of A. 

“The U of A provides flexibility, diversity, and real-world opportunities,” he said. “The top tier research, strong international support, and welcoming campus culture made me confident I could grow here, both as a student and as a person.”

“But what’s made the biggest difference is the people,” Sadman added. 

“The professors and grad students I’ve met here have been my mentors, always ready to guide me, encourage me, and challenge me to do better. And my department head has been a true beacon of light, guiding me and reminding me why I started this journey in the first place.” 

3. Strong International Support

As an international student who journeyed thousands of miles from his hometown, Sadman was grateful for the many avenues of support and community he found at the U of A. The diverse student body, sports community, and cultural resources on campus all helped him connect and thrive.

“U of A has been like a passport to the world for me,” commented Sadman. “I’ve made friends from so many countries, cultures, and backgrounds. Every conversation is a cultural exchange, and that’s helped me grow in ways I never expected. That cultural exchange is truly my favorite part.”

He also found community through sports, especially soccer, he said. 

“At the , I met students from the Middle East, Central Asia, and South America who shared the same passion, and we bonded instantly over the game.”

“On top of that, joining the connected me to my Bengali community here,” added Sadman. “Most countries have their own student associations, so I encourage new Wildcats to reach out to their regional groups; it’s one of the fastest ways to feel at home.” 

In turn, Sadman has advice for international students looking for support and connection on campus.

“My biggest advice for new international students is simple: explore everything.” 

“Your first year is the perfect time to get out there, attend every event you can, and take advantage of all the opportunities the campus has to offer,” Sadman shared. 

He noted that some of the most helpful resources for him have been:

4. Welcoming Campus Culture

“What I love most about the U of A campus is how alive it feels,” said Sadman. “You can stroll from a peaceful, palm-lined spot perfect for studying straight into the middle of a buzzing event or pep rally. There’s this perfect blend of calm and energy that keeps you inspired.” 

The energy picks up on game days, he noted, and with NCAA Division 1 sports teams plus ZonaZoo, one of the largest student sections in college sports, that’s no surprise to Wildcats. 

“On game days, the whole campus transforms; you can feel the excitement in the air before you even see the stadium,” said Sadman. “The energy, the sea of red and blue, the chants; it’s something I’ll cherish forever. It’s not just about the sport; it’s about feeling like you are part of one big Wildcat family. That’s the Wildcat spirit, where everyone’s part of the same story.” 

Sadman works on campus, too. He found a convenient and enjoyable on-campus job through , the free online career hub used at the University of 51��¥. He started out by volunteering, and was later hired as an Outreach Student Assistant for . 

“In this role, I wear many hats,” he said. “The best part? The satisfaction of helping new students get admitted to the University of 51��¥, guiding them through the process, and sharing my own experiences to make their journey easier. Knowing I might be the reason someone feels confident enough to say ‘Yes’ to U of A? That’s the kind of impact that sticks with you.”

5. Warm Tucson Environment

Sadman added that the warm and welcoming atmosphere extends beyond the 51��¥ campus, into the city that surrounds it. 

“What I enjoy most about Tucson is the combination of friendly people, amazing food, and endless outdoor adventures,” he said. “The mountains here are perfect for hiking and camping, and the local food scene is always a treat. But my absolute favorite? The sunsets. No matter how busy the day gets, watching the sky turn into a painting every evening is something I’ll never get tired of.”

What’s it feel like to study abroad and find community here at the U of A? We asked Arshia, a junior Medicine major and W.A. Franke Honors Wildcat who lived in Iran and Turkey before coming to the United States. He shared his experiences as an international student navigating the University of 51��¥. 

Why did you choose to pursue your degree at the University of 51��¥?

To be honest, the University of 51��¥ atmosphere, , the facilities of campus – such as the  – and the closeness to California, where I have some family, as well as the scholarship offer, were strong reasons to choose U of A, for me.

What do you like about the U of A campus?

The U of A campus is very beautiful, and I like the super helpful staff and student communities. Additionally, I love how I can easily walk or use my bike to reach wherever I want on campus.

It’s a balanced life of working hard and playing hard. I love the freedom that we have here, and it’s a simulation of the future world, the world that we experience here as a higher quality of living in comparison to any other place, which we will be able to take with us to the future world after graduation. 

What do you enjoy about Tucson?

Tucson is a beautiful city. I mostly enjoy seeing the mountains, the beautiful stars in the sky, the Monsoon season’s heavy rains, and the cacti that make the city special to me. In my hometown, Tehran, I don’t have these experiences.

Why did the W.A. Franke Honors College appeal to you?

When I learned about the , the exceptional, smaller community appealed to me as a first-year student who was new to the university, city, state of 51��¥, and the United States. The Franke Honors College provided me with the opportunity of closer support of the staff, and allowed me to be with enthusiastic people putting in effort and focusing on their goals. In short, the Franke Honors College appealed to me because it created a well-prepared atmosphere for growth and encouraged lifelong learning.

What is your goal after graduation?

While I could use what I learned after getting my bachelor’s for working in research or teaching science, I’m thinking of preparing for medical school and being a doctor.

How has the University of 51��¥ helped you work toward your academic and career goals?

51��¥ is a blessing for me. From the first day I set foot as a first-year student till now, I have had unbelievable support from the U of A. They started with the welcome ceremonies and continued by offering truly helpful resources. For example, by introducing the  so that I don’t feel lost on my way to medical school; the  to be able to solve my problems with the least stress about what I wasn’t able to comprehend in class; or making office hours available so that I can ask questions in a more personalized atmosphere. On the other hand, offering support to chill with fun activities that the  or deans of students offer, such as . 

 How has the Franke Honors College helped you work toward your academic and career goals?

The Franke Honors College is a very interesting community. It gives me enthusiasm to continue my good work and be a lifelong learner, and makes it possible for me to go deeper into the details of academic topics related to my major that interest me. The ability to choose classes early makes it easier to choose classes that I really need, while the great advice of my lets me know the direction I should move in and what to expect. The  gave me a chance to use what I learned in a real-world simulation, practicing it practically.

What advice would you give new International students at the University of 51��¥? 

My advice to International students contains my personal experience and different points of view. 

• First and foremost, ask questions. Ask good questions from the Support, Outreach, Success  that are in the (BASC) building as well as the , located near the main grassy area on campus.
• Don’t wait if you are experiencing challenges. For example, get help from resources like  (Counseling and Psychological Services), as needed.
• You will find friends, but it takes some time.
  • Try to participate in fun activities on campus that you will see at specific times on the campus grassy area, which are for us students to recharge and continue our educational path stronger afterwards.
  • Balance yourself by making relations with other international and domestic students while being connected to your own roots, as this will decrease the chance of being homesick.
• Last but not least, if you get homesick, try going to places that make you feel better. For example, during my first semester, I had food at a Persian restaurant in Tucson, to feel more like home, or visited a Turkish restaurant near campus because it made me feel better, as I lived in both Iran and Turkey before coming to the United States.

When Aryan arrived at the University of 51��¥, like many first-year students, he faced the challenge of adjusting to a completely new environment. However, instead of navigating it alone, Aryan quickly found purpose and belonging through the  — a place where his passions for leadership, mentorship, and science came together.

A Foundation of Purpose and Belonging

Aryan, now a first-year medical student, once wore many hats on campus. As a  and teaching assistant for Organic Chemistry, Aryan led office hours and helped teach complex topics to fellow students. "Helping others understand O-Chem not only reinforced my own learning, but it also [allowed me the] chance to give back and support students who may be struggling, just like I once was," Aryan shared.

His passion for helping others didn’t stop in the classroom. As a  tutor, Aryan supported students from all backgrounds, helping them build confidence and clarity in their writing. “It’s empowering to see someone find their voice, especially when they walk in unsure of their skills,” Aryan explained.

Mentoring and Empowering Others Through Leadership

One of the roles that most shaped Aryan’s college experience was serving as a  In this leadership position, Aryan guided a small group of first-year Franke Honors students, helping them transition to college life. “Being a PATH mentor gave me a deeper understanding of the Franke Honors College. That sense of belonging is something Aryan emphasizes towards incoming and prospective students, especially those who are first-generation or navigating college independently. “My biggest piece of advice is to not be afraid to seek out community. There are so many ways to find your people — through your major, clubs, hobbies, or even the . I met some of my closest friends there during my first year.”

Building Community and Preparing for the Future

In addition to his academic support roles, Aryan was deeply involved in both hands-on medical training and the . Through the 51��¥ , he practiced his clinical skills with high-fidelity simulators, which have proven to be an invaluable part of his journey toward a career in medicine. "It makes everything feel more real and reminds me why I’m here," Aryan shared. Simultaneously, his involvement in HEAP — a selective pathway to medical school — was a defining aspect of his Franke Honors College experience. “HEAP took a lot of pressure off. Knowing I was part of a cohort with a shared goal gave me space to grow academically and personally without the added stress of traditional pre-med competition.”
